Mental toughness is the ability to continue in the face of adversity.
Everyone who has ever been successful has faced adversity, and you will too.
There is no one type of adversity either.
It looks different for everyone, but overcoming it is the same process for everyone.
Over time, I have found three insights that make the biggest difference.
1) Anticipation is worse than participation
Dean Stott said it best: “Anticipation is worse than participation.”
When you chase a new goal, your mind will forecast worst-case scenarios.
That does not mean you are weak.
It means you have a normal brain doing its job, trying to keep you safe.
Mental toughness starts when you recognize the story for what it is and decide you will not lose to what is made up in your mind.
If you are going to fail, fail to something real.
2) Build a plan and put your confidence in the plan
Peak performers create a plan based on reality, then they execute the plan.
That is the shift from emotional dependence to disciplined progress.
I am not relying on courage in the moment.
I am relying on the plan.
Here is one of my core rules: “You put your self-esteem in your work habits, not into your production.”
Outcomes fluctuate.
Circumstances show up.
You cannot control every result, but you can control whether you build a plan and work it.
If the plan fails, I do not label myself a failure.
I update the plan and keep moving.
3) Do the right things for however long it takes
A lot of people talk about “doing whatever it takes.”
I do not.
I will do the right things for however long it takes.
Deadlines are useful for urgency, but they become dangerous when you tie your identity to them.
If a goal matters, extend the horizon and stay on course.
This is why I believe one of the simplest strategies for success is: outlast most people.
Your next step:
Pick one goal you are serious about.
Then apply the formula:
- Start moving even when fear is loud.
- Build the plan and work the plan.
- Stay in it long enough to win.
