3 Reasons Most Personal Brands Do Not Financially Survive #178

One of the most heartbreaking things I see is a mission-driven messenger who wants to help people, but cannot make enough money to survive.

So let me give you the overarching “secret” up front: if you have diluted focus, you get diluted results.

Most personal brands collapse because focus gets diluted in three places.

1) Too many topics

I see this all the time, especially with early-stage experts: “I can speak on leadership, communication, hiring, culture, customer experience, social media…”

You may get hired here and there, but if you are talking about everything, you are not the expert in any one thing.

Focus is how you break through.

You become the world’s leading expert on one narrow slice of the market.

Then, once you are known, you can expand.

2) Too many audiences

The second reason brands fail is that they try to serve everyone.

The temptation is understandable, but impact is not created by being broadly useful.

You are more likely to change the world by changing a few lives in a deeper way.

Choose the audience you know best and can serve best.

One of the simplest filters I use is this: you are most powerfully positioned to serve the person you once were.

3) Too many revenue streams

You have probably heard, “You need multiple streams of income.”

Early on, I believe that advice is destructive.

When you are starting out, you need one highly profitable stream of income.

Building a successful revenue stream requires marketing, sales, fulfillment, customer service, operations, and more.

If you keep building new offers, you never build the systems required to make any of them work at a high level.

Almost every wealthy person made their money by doing one thing really well.

Then, after the foundation was real, they diversified.

A simple next step

If you want your personal brand to financially survive, pick your focus point for each category:

One topic to own.

One primary audience to serve deeply.

One revenue stream to master first.

If you’re finding yourself needing more specific help clarifying your priorities and sharpening the message you are building your life around, that is exactly what we do at Brand Builders Group.
