How to Find Your Purpose and Passion in Life

How to Figure out What to do With Your Life

Have you ever struggled with feeling like there is something that you’re meant to do, but you don’t know what or how to do it?

You don’t know the first step?

You don’t know who to talk to?

Or maybe you don’t know what skills or tools you need to make it happen?

For a long time, I felt like my life was on a very clear path. I had a clear vision, a clear plan, there was something I was dedicating my life to.

And then all of a sudden, one day, very unexpectedly, it changed.

I was suddenly called to something different that didn’t feel realistic; something I had never done before. It was a really challenging space to be in where I had to figure out what I was going to do next with my life.

But here’s what I realized:

THE THING THAT FEELS THE MOST IMPOSSIBLE FOR YOU TO DO COULD BE THE VERY THING THAT YOU WERE MEANT TO DO.

Finding Your Purpose

Because the fact that we feel called to it and scared of it indicates that there is growth for us in that journey.

I believe whatever it is that God puts on your heart is there for a reason. If there’s something inside you that says, “I want to do that. I want to be that person and accomplish this thing.”

That is the calling.

But then you’re immediately scared. You’re unsure of how to do it. Unsure of what it would take to make it happen.

Then, I believe that is a strong indication that what is the very thing that you were meant to do.

In my book Take The Stairs I talk about how fear is your creativity working in the wrong direction. It is your mind wandering and focusing on all the things that could go wrong.

Your mind does that to protect you. The neuroscience of the human brain is designed to keep you safe and comfortable.

But that means if it’s just fear, and it’s not danger, there’s likely more work that has to be done.

There is growth to be experienced.

FEAR IS AN INDICATION THAT YOU ARE ON THE RIGHT PATH.

How to Pursue Your Passion

For me, that has happened over and over in my life. I have found that the things I am most passionate about, and the things that have been my biggest and most exciting dreams are also the things that I have been most scared of.

My guess is that the same will be true for you. Part of how you discover your passion is by paying attention to what you’re scared of doing. The fact that your scared is a signal that it’s a pursuit that matters deeply to your soul.

I remember the first time I said I ever said I wanted to win the World Championship of Public Speaking…

I remember the first time I said I wanted to be a New York Times bestselling author…

I remember the first time I said I wanted to lead an eight-figure company…

I remember the first time I said I would love to be inducted into the Professional Speaking Hall of Fame…

All of those things seemed so impossible the first time I thought about them. They seemed so incredibly scary to me. They seemed like there was no way they would ever happen.

And yet they all did because I was able to identify that if it scared me, it must be closely connected to my passion, which meant that is also much be closely connected to my purpose.

Whatever it is that you want in your life, chances are it will feel scary and impossible, but that is only evidence that it’s probably the very thing that you are meant to do.
