What Great Leaders Actually Do #176

Most leadership advice is inspirational.

What most teams need is behavioral.

When I strip leadership down to what actually works, it comes back to one truth: people are the priority.

Leadership is about activating human potential.

Drawing the best out of the people in your care.

Here are the three things I focus on.

1) Make people feel important

The simplest way to do this is recognition.

I do two kinds of recognition:

• I recognize the work they did.

• I recognize the importance of the work they do.

When I tell someone, “You did a great job,” it matters.

When I explain how their work connects to the larger mission, it multiplies the meaning.

One reminder I never forget: verbal affirmation is a form of currency.

Practical: Do this in real time.

Not just in annual reviews.

Not just when someone is struggling.

2) Make people feel empowered

Empowerment is what happens when someone feels trusted and supported in the present.

I do that by giving full attention, sharing vision, and listening deeply.

Vision matters more than most leaders realize.

When I paint a clear picture of where we are going, people come alive.

I also reinforce values through mechanisms.

I want people to see that what we say we care about is what we actually reward.

Practical: If you say you value initiative, reward initiative. If you say you value excellence, do not let “good enough” slide.

3) Make people feel special

This is the one many leaders skip.

I make people feel special by recognizing their humanity.

I do not need to know every detail of someone’s life.

I do need to know something real about who they are outside of work.

One practical way I think about it is this: every person has a movie.

Their life has highs and lows that shaped them.

My job is to care enough to learn a few scenes.

A simple next step

Pick one person on your team this week.

Recognize their work.

Explain why it matters.

Ask one question about their life beyond the role.

These three habits create trust.

Trust creates performance.
