If you’ve ever felt like giving up because things got hard, frustrating, or inconvenient, you’re not alone.
But here’s a secret: success doesn’t belong to the smartest, the luckiest, or the best-looking.
Success belongs to those who can outlast their competition.
Now when I say “outlast their competition,” I’m not talking about beating your market competition.
I’m talking about outlasting the intangible competitors vying for your energy: fear, self-doubt, insecurity, and the never-ending stream of excuses that creep in along the way.
If you’ve ever caught yourself blaming the algorithm, feeling like your message doesn’t matter, or thinking you don’t have the right skills to succeed, let me challenge you with this: You have EVERYTHING you need to make an impact right now.
The question is, are you willing to keep going even when it’s hard?
Here are three powerful strategies to help you outlast the obstacles in your way.
1. Get Clear on Your Vision
If you’re struggling to stay disciplined or motivated, it’s not because you’re lazy or unqualified. It’s because your vision isn’t clear enough.
Here’s a truth from my book Take the Stairs: The amount of your endurance is directly proportionate to the clarity of your vision.
When you know exactly what you’re working toward—when you can see it, feel it, and dream about it—it gives context to the sacrifices you’re making today.
Without a vision, discipline fades.
But with a vision?
Your mind, heart, and energy engage in ways that make the hard work feel worthwhile.
Spend time visualizing the future you want.
Picture that book on the bestseller shelf.
Imagine standing on the stage in front of thousands of people.
Whatever it is, make it so vivid in your mind that it feels real.
For me, I’ve seen this play out countless times.
Whether it was envisioning the house I wanted to live in or dreaming about hitting major career milestones, having a crystal-clear vision kept me focused and inspired.
Did I work my butt off to make it happen?
You bet.
But the vision is what gave me the fuel to keep going when it got tough.
Take a moment to ask yourself: What’s the future you’re working toward?
If you’re not clear on it, now’s the time to define it.
2. Commit Fully—Go All In
People don’t fail because they’re not talented.
Most people fail because they quit.
And most people quit because they didn’t truly commit in the first place.
In Take the Stairs, I talk about the buy-in principle of commitment: The more you have invested in something, the less likely you are to let it fail.
That means if you’re half-heartedly investing in your dream—putting in minimal time, energy, or resources—you’re more likely to walk away when it gets hard.
But when you’re all in, there’s no plan B.
You figure it out because you don’t have another option.
One of my mentors, Randy Gage, told me something early in my career that has stuck with me to this day: You should always be the number one investor in your own dream.
Not your boss.
Not a bank.
Not your rich uncle.
You.
What does this look like?
It means putting your money where your mouth is.
It means dedicating your time, energy, and resources to the thing you say you care about.
When you’ve got skin in the game, you don’t give up when things get inconvenient.
You stay the course.
3. Live in Service
When all else fails, shift your focus to service.
Service is the most powerful force of inspiration there is.
When you stop worrying about how hard something is and start thinking about how it impacts someone else, everything changes.
Here’s a truth that’s helped me push through countless challenges: There is no fear when the mission to serve becomes clear.
You’re not worried about how you look, whether you’re good enough, or whether people will like you.
You’re focused on showing up for the people who need you.
Think about it this way: Every time you push through your own discomfort—every time you press “publish” on a post or video or invest in your growth—you’re doing it for someone else.
You’re doing it for the person who needs to hear your message.
Your work matters to someone.
Your message matters to someone.
When you truly embrace this, you’ll find a new level of commitment.
Stick in There, It’s Worth It
This work is hard.
It’s messy.
It takes courage.
But if you stay focused on your vision, fully commit to your dream, and anchor yourself in service, you’ll find the strength to keep going.
You don’t have to wait for perfect circumstances or for fear to magically disappear.
Just show up.
Take the next step.
Hit record.
Press publish.
You’re one button away from changing someone’s life—including your own.
